Mules Set for NCAA Quarterfinals after Topping TCNJ

Middlebury, Vt. - The 12th ranked Colby College Women's Lacrosse team continues on their NCAA tournament push after upsetting the 6th ranked The College of New Jersey in a round three matchup. The Mules will face top ranked Middlebury tomorrow in hopes to deliver the Panthers their first loss of the season in a quarterfinals inner conference battle.

Against the Lions, Ally Franz got Colby on the board first, however TCNJ responded quickly with a goal of their own for a 1-1 opening score. For the rest of the first quarter, the Mules dominated going on a four goal run which would continue into the second with Franz's third of the game marking the score 6-1. The Lions battled back for the rest of the first half to cut the lead to two with a 7-5 Colby lead.

To open the second half, Colby increased their lead to four after receiving goals from Julia Jardina and Gianna Bruno for a 9-5 advantage. The two teams traded goals for the rest of the quarter resulting in a 11-7 score heading into the final frame. To extended the lead further, the Mules added two more for a six point cushion with nine minutes to go in the game. TCNJ tried to bounce back knotting an eighth goal but Colby stayed on top for a 14-9 final.

Franz was the top scorer of the game netting five including an assist as Bruno grabbed a hat-track and two assists. Jardina, Ainsley Dion, Annie Eddy and Paige Saudek all gathered two points a piece. The Mules outpaced in draw controls 20-7 led by Jardina (10) and Dion (eight) which was a big impact on the final result. Sarah Hearns in net finished with 11 saves.

The NCAA DIII quarterfinals matchup between Colby and Middlebury takes place tomorrow at 1:00pm right back in Middlebury.
