Amherst, Mass. - The Colby College Women's Lacrosse Team faced off against 15th-ranked Amherst College in their 6th NESCAC battle of the season. The game was a closely contested nail-biter but Colby ultimately came out on top with a final score of 13-12. With this win, Colby improves their record to 8-3 overall and 4-2 in the conference.
The Mules dominated early on, scoring five goals in the first quarter, while the Mammoths struggled to find the back of the net. Amherst finally broke through with a goal from first-year midfielder Bridget Finley late in the period. In the second quarter, Colby continued to control the game and scored two more goals to take a 7-1 lead. However, Amherst rallied back late in the quarter and closed the gap by scoring two more goals.
Following halftime, the Mammoths continue their comeback scoring four goals and carrying it until the end of the fourth quarter. The two teams traded goals in the fourth quarter, but neither team could gain a decisive advantage, sending the game into overtime at a score of 12-12. Julia Jardina who scored her third goal, the game-winning goal, for the Mules, lifting them to a 13-12 victory over Amherst.
Colby showed both great defensive control, with eight saves by junior
Sarah Hearns, and offensive dominance with four scored goals by
Elizabeth Hennessey, making her the leading scorer. The Mules will look to carry their momentum into their next game on Wednesday against Bowdoin for another heated NESCAC matchup.
