Waterville, Maine. - The Colby Women's Lacrosse team took on the visiting Trinity Bantams today in the quarterfinals of the NESCAC Women's Lacrosse Championships at Bill Alfond field. The Mules emerged victorious with a 12-10 scoreline, advancing to the NESCAC Semifinals with an overall record of 12-4 and a NESCAC record of 7-3.
Trinity had a strong start, scoring two goals in the first five minutes, but Colby's
Gianna Bruno responded quickly with a goal to close the score deficit. Despite Bruno's efforts, Trinity extended their lead to 6-2 by the end of the first quarter. Colby took the momentum away in the second quarter beginning with a goal from Bruno to
Cami McDonald and outscored the Bantams 6-1 in the period to lead 8-7 at halftime. The Mules maintained their lead throughout the second half, with
Paige Saudek scoring the first goal of the third quarter and Bruno assisting
Cami McDonald in the final minute of the period. Colby's
Ally Franz scored early in the fourth quarter, but Trinity rallied to make the score 11-10. However, Saudek scored on Bruno's fourth assist of the game with 3:26 remaining, securing the win for the Mules. Caroline Lampert of Trinity got off two shots in the final three minutes, but one was blocked and the other saved by
Jillian Kane, allowing Colby to run out the clock.
The Mules outshot Trinity 33-20 and won 17 of 26 draws as both teams committed 14 turnovers. Saudek was the game's top scorer with three goals, and Kane made six saves after coming off the bench with her team down 3-0.
Colby's victory over the Bantams secures their place in the NESCAC semifinals, where they will face top-seeded Middlebury next weekend at noon. The winner of that game will move on to the finals, set to take place on May 8th. The Mules will aim to continue their winning streak and reach the championship game.
