Medford, Mass- The Colby Crew Team traveled to Medford, Massachusetts to take on Coast Guard in a dual regatta this past weekend. The highlight was the 13
th ranked Men's Varsity 8 rowing a patient and complete race to upset the 9
th ranked Bears. According to coach Stewart Stokes, "After a disappointing result last weekend, the crew was able to use the week of practice to work hard, address some of areas that needed improvement, and gain more speed." While both boats were neck-and-neck for much of the race, Colby found an extra gear and eventually pulled away to win by a margin of over ten seconds. The Women's Varsity 8 also arrived ready to race and took the competition to CGA for the entire race, eventually falling by less than 5 seconds to a top-ten ranked competitor.
The Men's Varsity 4 rebounded from a tough week of illness and disruptions to row a competitive race, battling neck-and-neck with Coast Guard for most of the race before the Bears pulled away for the win. The Women's 2
nd Varsity 8 competition proved to be one of the most exciting on the day, with the result decided by barely a second between the two boats. While Colby led by a small margin at the half way point, Coast Guard was able to rally to just edge the Mules at the line, winning in a time of 7:49.2, while Colby finished with a time of 7:51.8. The results on the day were a source of optimism for Coach Stokes and the team: "Today's race was a big step forward after a disappointing result last weekend and propelling the crew to a more focused and effective week of practice." He said.
