Chicago, Ill. - The Colby Women's Lacrosse team traveled to Illinois on Wednesday for their third out-of-conference game of the season against the 16th-ranked University of Chicago (5-1 overall). The Mules entered the matchup set to continue on their winning path as they ultimately emerged victorious with a final score of 16-7. The win takes Colby to 3-3 and pushes down the Maroons' record to 5-1.
The Mules came out strong in the first half and tallied six goals, with Senior
Annie Eddy scoring half of them. Colby's defense and composure, with eight secured saves by
Sarah Hearns, also enabled the team to shut out the Maroons and keep the lead for the whole game. In the second quarter, on the offensive end, the Mules continued to dominate with four more goals, including two by
Elizabeth Hennessey. The third quarter was dominated by
Paige Saudek, who secured two goals, Junior
Tori Congdon, who scored her first of the season, and
Annie Eddy's fifth goal of the game.
The last quarter was closely fought, with both teams trading goals in the early going, but it was not enough for the University of Chicago to catch up on the score deficit. The Mules' win can also be attributed to the standout attacker
Gianna Bruno, who assisted on four goals. Furthermore, draw controls also went in Colby's favor at 16-9, led by
Ainsley Dion and
Julia Jardina, who tallied eight draw controls each.
Colby's fast-paced attack and stifling defense has been an important component to their winning streak. The Mules will now head back home to face Hamilton College on Saturday for another electrifying NESCAC challenge.
