Waterville, Maine - The Colby Women's Basketball team hosted Bates College Wednesday night resulting in a nail biter contest that came down to the final possession of play. The Mules unfortunately could not get the end of the game to go their way falling to the Bobcats by a single point 55-54. This places Colby at 6-3 on the season as Bates improves to 7-1.
The two teams stayed pretty even throughout the first half as the Bobcats went into the break with just a three point lead. Colby's
Kate Olenik, while leading all scores, contributed 10 of the Mules 30 points in the first half. To start the third quarter, Bates was able to build upon their small lead and turn it into a nine point 47-38 score heading into the final frame. Colby continued to battle eventually turning the game into a one point Mules lead with only a minute thirty left on the clock. Bates answered quickly for a one point lead of their own as the Mules were left with six seconds on the clock to draw up a buzzer beater opportunity. On the final play, Olenik was able to drive into the paint and put up the final shot but could not get the bucket to fall after the ball bounced on the rim mutiple times leading to a heartbreaking Colby loss.
Olenik managed to score 18 total points in the contest followed by
Adaobi Nebuwa with 14 points and five rebounds.
Lydia Mordarski also had a good showing adding on eight points and seven rebounds.
Colby Women's Basketball will now hit the road to face Stevens December 9th at 1:00pm.
