Waterville, Maine - The Colby College Men's Ice Hockey team opened the 2023-24 campaign with a scoreless tie Friday night against the Middlebury College Panthers.
The visitors had a prime opportunity early in the second frame when senior All-American defenseman
Jack Sullivan was hit with a five minute major after a heavy collision with a Middlebury player. The Mules terminated the power play with impressive fashion, allowing only six total shots, two of which sailed wide, two were blocked (
Griffin Grise,
Max O'Brien), and two were saved by goaltender
Andy Beran.
With the scoreless game sent to overtime, the Panthers applied all the pressure only to have Beran prove to be the player of the match. The All-American was ready for the challenge, thwarting each and every Middlebury attempt to the tune of eight saves in five minutes, including a break away. Beran ended the game with 27 total saves for his first shutout of the season. Middlebury goaltender Jake Horoho collected 24 saves from his end of the ice. The Mules dominated the Panthers in the face off circle, winning 39 of 64 puck drops. First-year
Dhillon Wilde won nine of his 11 chances.
Colby is back in action Saturday when they host Williams College at 3:00pm in the O'Neil | O'Donnell Forum. The Ephs defeated Bowdoin 3-2 Friday night in their opener, an overtime victory.
