Waterville, Maine - It's not the way things wanted to end for Colby, especially against their rivals, but with this roller coaster of a season, the loss against Bowdoin just added another layer of confusion to the mix. It's not that any player or side of the ball were particularly at fault, Colby just lacked confidence and desire which translated to the game. Freshman fourth string quarterback
Christopher Milmoe got his first start today as the quarterback carousel continues, but the fresh face couldn't do it all as the Mules lost to the Polar Bears 35-14. This loss takes both teams to 3-4 heading into their final games of the season.Â
Milmoe started his first game with an amazing back-shoulder throw to
Jack Sawyer for a first down on Colby's opening drive. However, the next play was calamitous as Bowdoin forced a fumble leading to the opening touchdown. Both teams went back and forth the remainder of the quarter, exchanging punts. The second quarter wasn't much better offensively for the Mules as a 16 yard pass to
Emmanuel Tshowa was the only play over 15 yards. Bowdoin ended up capitalized on Colby's lack of momentum, scoring two more touchdowns to take the lead into the break, 21-0.
Coming out of half, a fumble on a punt gave Colby the ball at the Bowdoin 31 yard line. A quick three and out led to a long 4th and 9 for the Mules, setting up arguably the most important play of the game as Milmoe scrambled for 16 yards to gain the first down. The resulting passing play was another moment of brilliance from Milmoe as he found
Matt McHugh for a 19 yard touchdown, McHugh's second of the year. Bowdoin got the ball back and found themselves inside Colby's ten yard line when an interception in the end zone got called back for defensive pass interference on the Mules, a call which could've gone both ways. The penalty led to another chance for the Polar Bears in which they converted to make the game 28-7. The start of the fourth sealed the win for Bowdoin with an early touchdown as a deep bomb set them up inside the red zone. Colby's defense struggled to defend the pass, often leaving the center of the field open which punished them in the end. A change in quarterbacks and running backs for the final drive saw
Thomas Keeling leading the line for the Mules. Freshman running back
Ryan Singhal checked in and made an immediate impact, rushing for 39 yards on seven attempts to set up Keeling for an easy 9 yard touchdown pass to
Atticus Duncan to end the game.
The Mules host Middlebury for their last game of the season this Saturday at 1:00pm as they look to end their season on a high.
