Colby Extends Winning Streak with Doubleheader Victories

Waterville, ME.- Colby hosted a doubleheader this Saturday, taking on the University of Southern Maine and Smith College and securing impressive victories in both matchups. They began with a commanding 3-0 win (25-15, 25-8, 25-13) against the Huskies. In the subsequent showdown against the Pioneers, the Mules displayed their strength, prevailing in four sets (23-25, 25-18, 25-22, 25-22) to extend their season record to 11-5.

The opening set saw Colby assert their dominance, clinching a convincing 25-15 victory, with Marjorie Johnson contributing five crucial kills. The Mules continued their commanding performance in the second set, winning 25-8, highlighted by five aces and 13 kills, including five from Johnson. Colby wrapped up the match with a 25-13 win in the third set, completing their sweep. Johnson led the game with an impressive 10 kills, while Brady Moseley closely followed with eight kills. Gabby Grujic played a pivotal role for the Mules, tallying 12 assists and five digs. Sophie Broesamle and LJ Grant showcased their serving prowess, combining for seven of Colby's 11 aces, with Grant also contributing 10 digs to bolster the defense. Additionally, Sydney Bopp recorded two solo blocks, adding to the Mules' strong defensive efforts. As a team the Mules amassed 39 kills with a .414 hitting percentage. 

After securing a victory against the Huskies, the Colby Women's Volleyball team faced off against Smith College and clinched their third win of the weekend. Despite the Pioneers' initial dominance, narrowly taking the first set with a score of 23-25, the Mules mounted a strong comeback. In the second set, Colby took an early lead of 8-3. Despite Smith College's efforts to equalize and shift the momentum, players like Bopp, Grujic, and Moseley combined their efforts to secure crucial points, ultimately winning the set with a score of 25-18. The third and fourth sets provided an opportunity for the Mules to maintain their winning streak, as they emerged victorious in both, sealing a highly successful weekend. In this game, Moseley led the team with an impressive total of 13 kills, closely followed by Bopp with six kills and an outstanding seven solo blocks. On the defensive front, Reanna Yadao made a significant contribution with 22 digs, while Grujic played a pivotal role with 22 assists and three aces, helping secure the victory.

The team's next game is scheduled for Friday, where they will face #2 seeded Middlebury in an exciting NESCAC matchup as the Mules currently sit in third in the NESCAC standings. Colby is eagerly anticipating the opportunity to compete in the Margaret M. Crook Center and aims to extend their winning streak.
