Waterville, Maine - The Colby College Volleyball Team Wraps Up Regular Season with a Thrilling 3-1 Victory Over Amherst. In this intense NESCAC matchup, the Colby College volleyball team showcased their strength and determination, securing a 3-1 victory against Amherst College (19-25, 25-23, 25-21, and 25-22). This impressive win not only caps their regular season on a high note but also elevates their overall record to 17-7 for the season, with a commendable 7-3 record in conference play. Most notably, this victory propels the Mules to an impressive 2nd place in the NESCAC ranking.
The opening set witnessed a powerful start from the Mules, as they surged ahead with a six-point lead. However, the Mammoths swiftly countered with five consecutive points, leveling the playing field. Amherst then embarked on a decisive 7-1 run, granting them a 13-9 advantage. Colby, displaying resilience, made a valiant effort to narrow the gap, but the Mammoths held their ground and eventually secured the set with a score of 25-19. The second set unfolded as a thrilling contest, with Amherst initially establishing a 17-13 lead. Undeterred, the Mules rallied and launched a spirited comeback, equalizing the set at 17-17. The Mammoths switched the lead to 20-17 advantage, but Colby mounted a remarkable comeback, winning five of the last six points to claim the set with a razor-thin margin of 25-23. In the third set, a remarkable five-point streak by Colby put them ahead at 12-8, keeping the Mammoths on their toes as they sought a comeback. Both sides engaged in a tense exchange of points for 12 consecutive rallies. Then, a 4-0 surge by Colby extended their lead to 21-15. The Mammoths fought back, scoring four consecutive points to cut Colby's lead to 23-21. However, the Mules ultimately secured the set with a 25-21 margin, with a key kill by first-year player
Brady Moseley. The fourth set saw the Amherst building a 12-6 lead, but Colby orchestrated a magnificent comeback, scoring seven consecutive points to regain the lead. The set remained closely contested, tied at 20-20, before Colby staged an incredible five-point run, driven by first-year
Sophie Broesamle's impressive serves. This streak brought them to set point, and although the Mammoths fought back by winning the next two points, sophomore
Sydney Bopp delivered a decisive kill to end the match in Colby's favor.
In this critical NESCAC matchup, Colby's volleyball team witnessed outstanding performances from their key players. Moseley led the offensive charge with an impressive 15 kills, complemented by
Marjorie Johnson's nine kills and
Emma Davis and Bopp's valuable eight kills. Defensively, Bopp's solid performance included 2 crucial blocks, while Johnson and
Azariah Love each contributed a block of their own.
Allison Rodriguez orchestrated the team's offense with 21 assists, complemented by
Jordan Lee's 15 assists. The defensive effort was anchored by
Reanna Yadao's remarkable 38 digs, while Broesamle added 22 digs.Â
While some NESCAC teams compete in the first round of the championship, Colby will be in the quarterfinals, eagerly awaiting the outcome of the Bowdoin versus Hamilton matchup. The Mules will host the winner Sunday November 5th at 1:00pm.Â
