Castine, Maine - The Colby Volleyball team extended their winning streak to seven consecutive victories with a commanding win over the Maine Maritime Mariners in a non-conference match Tuesday. The Mules secured the victory in three sets (25-18, 25-9, 25-19) which brings Colby's overall record to 14-5, while the Mariners' record falls to 15-4.
The match's first set started with an early advantage for the Maine Maritime Mariners, who maintained their lead until 11-9. However, the Mules mounted a comeback to level the score and then surged ahead to reach 15-12. Although the Mariners attempted to equalize, the Mules orchestrated a remarkable six-point streak, extending their lead to 21-15 and setting the tone for the rest of the set. Despite some back-and-forth exchanges in the closing moments, the Mules ultimately secured the first set with a score of 25-18. In the second set, Colby dominated, with sophomore
Sydney Bopp making a powerful start with a kill. The Mules quickly built a substantial lead of 13-3. Although the Mariners added a few more points and reached nine, Colby maintained a solid advantage, resulting in a decisive second set with a final score of 25-9. The third set was the most closely contested, marked by frequent lead changes at the beginning until both teams reached 15-15. It was at this point that the Mules mounted a sprint, leaving Maine Maritime trailing at 21-15. Despite the Mariners' efforts, they were unable to close the gap and stabilized at 19, allowing Colby to secure the victory with a final score of 25-19.
Inside the box score, the Mules tallied a total of eight aces, led by
Reanna Yadao with three aces and backed by
Allison Rodriguez with two. On the defensive side, they showcased their prowess with four crucial blocks, with Bopp and
Sarah Friedrichs each contributing three blocks assists, and
Hannah Wyllie adding one solo. The offensive firepower was apparent, with 29 kills in the game, led by
Brady Moseley with six kills, Bopp and
Emma Davis with five kills each. The assist game was efficiently handled by
Gabby Grujic with 14 assists, while Rodriguez and Yadao combined for nine more assists together. Colby's tenacity was evident in the 43 digs they accumulated during the match, with Yadao leading with 11 digs, closely followed by Moseley with nine and Grujic with seven.
Colby's next challenge is just around the corner as they prepare to take on Wheaton College (Mass.) in their upcoming home game on Friday. With their recent string of victories, the team is eager to hit the court at the Margaret M. Crook Center, looking to build on their successful streak in this non-conference matchup.
