Mules Split with Trinity, Show Power in Nightcap

Hartford, Conn. - The Colby Softball team matched up against Trinity College Saturday in a regular season finale doubleheader. The Mules were looking for a bounce back following a tough battle against the Bantams on Friday afternoon. Despite falling in game one 6-5, Colby bounced back in a big way, defeating the Bantams 14-0 via mercy rule in game two.

Sam Ahlholm got the start in the circle for the Mules in game one, pitching a complete 6.0 innings. Trinity was able to get an early lead against Colby across the first three innings before Ahlholm kept the home team off the board the rest of the way.  Colby chipped away with two unearned runs in the fifth and continued to narrow the gap in the seventh inning, with RBI singles by Amanda Cabral and Katelyn Hays and an RBI double by Chloe Wilcox. With the tying run on second, the Bantams were able to induce a fielder's choice to end the threat.

In game two, Colby's offense took center stage, totaling fifteen hits and scoring 14 runs. Wilcox, Ashley Ketchum, and Abby Orso tallied three hits apiece, and combined for nine RBIs. Four other players knocked in runs including Logan Luebbe, Jackie Hill, Cabral, and Ilano. The confines of the Trinity Softball Field could not contain the bats of Wilcox and Orso, as Wilcox homered in the second inning to put the Mules ahead 5-0, and Orso smashed a grand slam in the fourth to put the game out of reach at 13-0. Orso pitched for the Mules, going 5.0 innings, scattering two hits and striking out five.

Colby is set to enter the NESCAC playoffs Saturday as Tufts University hosts the eight-team playoff.  The tournament is single elimination.  As the 3rd seed in the East Division, Colby matches up against the Middlebury Panthers (#2 from the West Division) at 9:30am.
