Waterville, MAINE - Colby Baseball hosted their NESCAC rival, Bowdoin College on Friday, April 22nd. That was the first of the three games the Mules would play against the Polar Bears this weekend, with the other two being on the road on Saturday, April 23rd. Unfortunately, Colby walked away with a loss in the series, taking one game of three. At home on Friday, the Mules lost 3-10. On Saturday, Colby fell in the first game of their doubleheader, 1-7, but was able to rally in the second game winning 7-6.
John Doyle was charged with the loss for the first game of the weekend. The 6'4 senior pitched one and third innings, allowing one hit, four bases on balls, and two earned runs.
Julian Erro, got the start, pitching four and two thirds innings. He allowed four earned runs on five hits. The rest of the game was pitched by
Matthew Scibilio and
Mark Sunoo. Scibilio pitched one inning, allowing three runs on three hits. Sunoo pitched two innings, allowing one run on two hits.
The offense of the Mules struggled in this one, scoring only three runs, two in the first and one in the fifth. Short stop,
Charlie Furlong, led the team in hits with two on four at bats. Center fielder,
Patrick McConnell led the team in RBIs with two on one hit. Greg LeClair was responsible for the third run for Colby, batting in a run of his own with his sole hit of the game.
Brunswick, MAINE- The Mules then travaled to Brunswick to take on the Polar Bears on the road in a double header on Saturday the 23rd. They lost the first game, but were able to avoid a series sweep and win the third 7-6. In game one of the day,
Jack Bohrer got the start, pitching five innings and allowing seven runs on five hits.
Howell Eglin closed the game, pitching one inning and allowing no runs or hits.
Charlie Furlong,
Patrick McConnell, and
Drew Miller all tied for the team lead in hits with one, but it was
Marcus Forrester who scored the sole run for the Mules. He got on with a walk and then made his way around the bases, scoring without the help of an RBI from one of his teammates.
In Saturday's game two, Colby finally got the bats going. Scoring two in the fourth, two in the sixth, and three in the seventh.
Marcus Forrester once again led the team in hits with two. However, it was
Cole Palmeri that did a lot of the heavy lifting for the Colby victory. The sophomore catcher provided three RBIs on one hit. He also got on base two more times with walks and scored three runs of his own.
Nicholas Thompson got the start, pitching four and one third innings and allowing six runs on five hits.
Jack Pletter pitched another three innings, allowing only one hit and zero runs. Finally,
Ryan Grecco pitched one and two thirds innings, allowing no hits or runs. Colby had the game won by the seventh, as innings eight and nine were scoreless on both sides.
Colby plays next on Sunday, April 24th, at Endicott College at 1:00 PM. They'll look to bounce back from losing this series in that matchup.
