Waterville, Maine - The Colby Men's Lacrosse team picked up its first conference win of the season Saturday with a 10-9 win over previously unbeaten Wesleyan. Wesleyan is ranked #9 in Division III by the USILA after starting the season 4-0 with an average margin of victory of 16 goals.
The visiting Cardinals began the scoring in the first quarter two minutes into play. The Mules answered back with two goals of their own, as
Matt Stein and
Jack Goller put Colby out in front with six minutes left in the period. Wesleyan's potent offense went on a run with three goals to end the first, and tallied the opening goal of the second to open up a 5-2 lead. As the rain began to pick up on Seaverns Field, two goals by
Ryan Darby and one by
Noah Brooks brought the Mules within one at the half.
During the second half, the Colby defense stepped up with stop after stop, limiting the Wesleyan offense to three goals in the final 30 minutes. Despite holding the advantage in face offs won during the second half (8:2 advantage), the Cardinals went 1-5 in extra man opportunities in the third and fourth quarters as sophomore
Matt Suffredini tallied a career-high 16 saves in net for Colby.
Jack Rickards tied the game at nine with almost nine minutes to play, and the Mules and Cardinals fought for possession and quality shots for the remainder of play. Looking as if overtime was more of a probability than a possibility,
Nick Hassan tallied the game-winner with 48 seconds to play. Stein picked up the assist, and the Mules defense held on for a 10-9 victory.
Colby last defeated Wesleyan in the 2012 season.
Next up, the Mules travel to Williamstown, Mass. Monday to take on the Ephs of Williams College. Game time is set for 1:00pm.
