Softball Sweeps in Season Opener

Waterville, Maine- The Colby Softball Team opened their season against the Thomas College Terriers at the Softball Complex on the campus of Colby College. The Mules would go against the Terriers in a doubleheader this afternoon, winning both games and starting off the season 2-0.
 
The Mules jumped out to an early lead, with Ashley Ketchup tripling in her first at bat, scoring on a Chloe Wilcox double to give the Mules a 1-0 in the bottom of the first. Sam Ahlholm would start the game at pitcher for the Mules, going 5.0 innings, striking out four, and allowing one hit. Ahlholm's stellar performance in game one kept the Mules with a 1-0 lead for most of the game. Sophomore Payton Crowley came in for relief for the Mules, and would give up a run in the sixth, allowing Thomas to tie the game at one run a piece. After seven innings ended in a tie, the game went on to extra innings, where Crowley shut down the Terriers, striking out two batters in the eighth. Chloe Wilcox secured game one for the Mules, bringing in Ashley Ketchum on a double to win the game 2-1. Payton Crowley earned the win.
 
Payton Crowley got the start for the second game, carrying the momentum from the first game. Chloe Wilcox continued her RBI streak on the day, hitting a sacrifice fly to left field, scoring Brenna Forbes to give the Mules a 1-0 lead after one inning. Payton Crowley pitched 2.0 innings, striking out one in the process. Thomas would take the lead in the third inning, scoring two runs against the Mules. In the fourth inning, Jackie Hill hit a triple with one out, and score on a double by Morgan Fusco to tie the game at two runs each. Colby took control of the game in the sixth inning, scoring five runs to take a 7-2 lead and earn the eventual win. Chloe Wilcox finished the game with a game-high three RBIs and Ashley Ketchum led the game with three total hits.
 
The Mules will next play in Clermont, Florida on Sunday, March 20, against Hamilton College and Union College.
