Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

CWL Suffers First Setback of the Season

Waterville, Maine - The Colby Women's Lacrosse team took on Roger Williams University Wednesday in a battle of perennial sluggers.  Roger Williams entered the game riding a three-game win streak where the Hawks tallied 56 goals in that stretch.  The Mules were hot off their opening season win against then #2 Tufts University.  Behind five unanswered goals to start the game, the Hawks upset the Mules 13-10.

Despite the early attack by Roger Williams, the Colby defense stiffened and their offense began firing, scoring the next three goals to end the first quarter.  During the second quarter, the Mules and Hawks exchanged scores, entering halftime with the same two-goal deficit 7-5 in favor of Roger Williams. The second half saw similar complimentary play, with the two sides trading scores throughout.  With three minutes remaining, Eliza Dean's score brought Colby within two, but Roger Williams was able to control possession and score the game's final tally with just over one minute remaining, making the final score 13-10.

Colby had eight different scorers on the day, led by Elizabeth Hennessey and Annie Eddy with two apiece.  After two games, Eddy is the Mules' leading scorer with six goals on the year.  Last week's NESCAC Player of the Year Emily Podgorni had double-digit saves in goal (11) for the second straight game.  She was also highlighted this week by IWLCA as the Division III Defensive Player of the Week after tallying 16 saves against Tufts last weekend and holding the Jumbos to four goals for the first time since 2015.

Colby's match Saturday against Williams has been postponed due to the incoming weather.  The Mules will take to the road for their first contest of the season away from Mayflower Hill Sunday when they visit Plymouth State.
