Waterville, ME - Colby Women's Basketball faced the Hamilton Continentals on Friday in their seventh game of the NESCAC season. The Mules took off to a fast start, maintaining their lead throughout the game, however, the Continentals achieved a late comeback in the fourth quarter. The Mules fell to the Continentals with a final score of 59-55.
The first half of the first quarter initiated the competitive tone of the game. The Mules and the Continentals went back and forth, exchanging the lead in the first five minutes. Carter McGloon '24 was a leading scorer in the first quarter, scoring nine points of the team's 17. The Mules entered the second quarter with a score of 17-8. The Continentals played excellent defense in the second quarter, which led to more scoring opportunities and allowed them to close the Mules' lead from nine to three.
The third quarter proved the most competitive of the game, with each team scoring one point apart from each other. The Continentals were able to take over the Mules early in the quarter and grab the lead, but the Mules reclaimed their dominance when Caroline Smith '24 landed a layup in the third minute of the quarter, setting the score at 40-39. Free throws by Adaobi Nebuwa '24 and Smith led the Mules to enter the final period of the game with a score of 43-41. The Mules got off to a dominant start in the fourth quarter, with free throws by Smith and jumpers by Chiamaka Ubani '22 and Nebuwa giving the Mules a six point lead. However, the Continentals were able to tie up the game in the final second of the fourth minute, setting the game at 49-49. Both teams fought hard throughout the rest of the game and fought scrappy, with many of the points scored coming from free throws. However, the Continentals were able to assert themselves ahead of the Mules and emerge victorious from the game with a final score of 59-55.
McGloon led the Mules at the net, landing 14 of the Mules' points. Smith led the team in rebounds with eight, and Ubani had the most steals with three.
Colby Women's Basketball is next set to face Amherst College on Saturday, February 5 at 4PM EST.
