Waterville, ME - Colby Women's Basketball faced the Amherst Mammoths on Saturday in their eighth game of the NESCAC season. The Mules fell to the Mammoths, with a final score of 47-59.
The Mules got off to a strong start in the first quarter. While the Mammoths put up the first points, the Mules were able to claim the lead with a jumper by Caroline Smith '24 in the fifth minute. The Mules went on a streak to expand their lead to six and enter the second quarter with a score of 6-12. The Mules kept a similar pace early in the second quarter, landing nine points in the first six minutes and holding the Mammoths to seven. The Mammoths rallied a few points in the final minutes to tighten the Mules' lead to two.
The second half saw immediate action with a three-pointer by Keagan Dunbar '22 in the sixteenth second. The Mammoths quickly retaliated and tied up the game at 25-25 in the third minute. From here the two teams briefly went back and forth exchanging the lead, but the Mammoths found a source of momentum in the second half of the quarter, landing 11 points and establishing a five point lead over the Mules. The final quarter of the game saw plenty of scrappy play, with 13 of the 33 points scored coming from free throws. While the Mules were able to put up 13 points, the Mammoths outscored them by seven, allowing them to end the game with a 12 point lead.
The game ended with a final score of 47-59. Dunbar and Smith led the team in points scored, landing 16 and 15, respectively. Carly Christofori '22 and Smith led the team in turnovers, which played a crucial role in points scored, with nearly a third of the Mules' points being scored off turnovers.
Colby Women's Basketball is next set to face Bates College on Tuesday, February 8 at 7PM EST.
