Waterville, Maine- The Men's Ice Hockey program faced Hamilton College in a NESCAC matchup at the Jack Kelley rink this Saturday afternoon. This is the first of five games in eight days for the Mules, who were looking to get back in the win column after they tied against Connecticut College earlier in the week.
Â
Despite the Mules maintaining most of the possession in the first period, Hamilton would jump out to an early lead, scoring on their first shot on goal. Senior
Michael Thomas would score one second after a Mules power play expired at 13:10 of the period to tie the game for the Mules with assists to
John McElaney and
Brian Sanzone. The Mules would head into the second period tied with Hamilton at one goal apiece, outshooting the Continentals 14-3.
Â
Hamilton would once again jump into the lead early in the second period. The Mules would find opportunities to pressure Hamilton, but the Continentals' defense would make it difficult for the Mules to score.
Justin Grillo would find the puck behind the net and set up
Quinn Doyle to score on a one-timer at 16:50 of the second period to tie the game once again. The Mules would head into the final twenty of the game tied with Hamilton at two.
Â
The third period would be quite uneventful in comparison to the earlier periods. Both teams would stay out of the penalty box and would register seven shots on goal each and would go to a sudden victory overtime period.
Â
Sophomore
John McElaney would secure the win for the Mules 1:28 into the overtime period after ripping a shot by the Continental goaltender's left shoulder. Goalie
Andy Beran would register an assist on McElaney's game winning goal and would finish the game with sixteen saves.
Â
The Mules next play tomorrow afternoon at 1:00 PM against Amherst College in Waterville, Maine.
