Waterville, MAINE - Colby Men's Basketball hosted the Wesleyan Cardinals yesterday, February 11th at 7:00 PM. Before this game Colby had lost their last three. Thus, the team desperately hoped to change their momentum in their last regular season game. In those losses the Mules struggled to knock down shots, but played solid defensive basketball. This game was pretty much the opposite, ending in an 87-70 shootout loss.
Despite a firing offense, Colby lost control of the game pretty much immediately. The Mules found themselves down 19 at the end of the first half, 49-30.  In the first half the Mules shot 230.3% from the field and 42.11% from three, as well as 50.00% from the line. Despite the great offense, Wesleyan was simply better, shooting 61% from the field and 40% from three. They also took six more free throws and hit them at a higher clip, 77.78%.
Colby turned the game around in the second, outscoring the Cardinals 40-38, but ultimately failing to bring the game back to close contention. In the half Colby shot much better than the first, hitting 54.17% of their shots and 60% of their three point attempts. They also took five more free throws than they did in the first, showing a willingness to take contact that Coach Strahorn must've pulled out of his players at the intermission.Â
The main reason Colby lost this game was points in the paint, as Wesleyan outscored The Mules in that category 60-18. Wesleyan also scored 28 fast break points while Colby had four, but the Mules had 33 bench points to the Cardinals' eight.
Kyle Butler was the only Mule in double digit points for the night with 15, three rebounds, and a block. Â
Jack Lawson was the second highest scorer with nine points. With the two highest scorers having lower totals, its clear that Colby reached 70 points through a combination of scoring, which could bode well for the team heading into playoffs.Â
The Mules move onto playoffs after this game, and they will look to make a deep run under Coach Strahorn.Â
