Waterville, ME - Colby Women's Basketball faced the Wesleyan Cardinals on Friday in their final game of the NESCAC regular season. The game was close, but the Mules remained dominant throughout, ultimately defeating the Cardinals with a final score of 73-66.
The first quarter set a competitive tone for the match. The Mules and the Cardinals went back and forth on the court, with the Cardinals seeming to assert a commanding pace early on. While the Cardinals were able to hold a slim lead for the majority of the first quarter, the Mules got ahead with two free throws by Carly Christofori '22 after she was fouled in the final second. The second quarter followed a similarly tight pace, but the Mules were able to source enough momentum to outscore the Cardinals. Keagan Dunbar '22 played a strong role in the Mules' dominance, landing nine of the team's 16 points in the quarter.
The second half opened with a score of 29-25. The Mules got off to an assertive start, propelled by a layup and two three-pointers by Carter McGloon '24. The Cardinals were able to creep up on the Mules' lead after landing multiple three-pointers, but a time out by the Mules allowed them to regroup and propel themselves ahead of the Cardinals. In the final half of the third quarter, the Mules were able to land 14 points while holding the Cardinals to six, entering the final quarter with a nine-point lead. The end of the game was scrappy, with over half of the cumulative points being put on the board by free throws. The Cardinals took an aggressive tone in an attempt to come back, and they were able to rally a few points more than the Mules. However, the effort was not enough to overcome the Mules' lead, and the game ended with a final score of 73-66.
Caroline Smith '24 and McGloon led the Mules at the net, each landing 20 points and together making up more than half of those scored by the team. Defensively, Smith led the team in rebounds, making 10 throughout the game, and Christofori had the most steals with three.
