Football Drops Home Finale to Tufts

Waterville, Maine - The Colby Football team fell to 4-4 Saturday falling at home on Senior Day to Tufts University 35-7.  Tufts improved to 5-3.  The Mules have a chance to finish the season above .500 for the first time since 2005 with a win over Bowdoin College (2-6) in Brunswick on Saturday.

Tufts jumped out to a 14-0 lead with touchdowns in each of the first two quarters.  The Mules were able to close the gap prior to halftime when Keon Smart capped a 9-play 80-yard drive with less than two minutes to play in the second quarter.

Colby has been stellar in the second half of their matches all season, and Saturday they looked for another strong close to the game to overtake a powerful Tufts team.  While the Mules held the Jumbos to 125 first-half yards, the visitors scored touchdowns on all three second half possessions, eating up 219 yards while burning over 20 minutes off the clock.  Colby possessed the ball for only three drives in the second half and the Tufts defense kept the Mules out of the end zone the rest of the way to preserve the victory.

Matt Hersch threw for his third consecutive 200-yard performance, passing for 219 yards on 17 completions.  The signal caller was sacked seven times on the afternoon.  Nick Donatio and Julian Young paced the Mules on defense with 12 and 11 tackles respectively.  Luke D'Aloia (nine tackles) and Marc Dougherty (eight tackles) followed.

Colby is back in action Saturday evening for the season finale at Bowdoin.  A Colby win marks the most successful season for the Mules in 17 years, and would capture the fourth consecutive CBB title for Jack Cosgrove in his tenure on Mayflower Hill.
