Brunswick, Maine - The Colby Football team traveled to Brunswick Saturday night to face off with the Polar Bears in the 133rd meeting between Colby and Bowdoin. Despite a level first half (tied 14-14 at the break), Bowdoin rode a churning ground game and a penetrating defensive line to its first victory over Colby since 2015 by a score of 21-14. Colby finishes their season 4-5, ranked fifth in NESCAC.
Bowdoin rode its opening possession of the contest 75 yards on 16 plays for the first score of the game. The Polar Bears only attempted two passes on the drive, establishing their ground game early. Colby answered back with scores on its first two possessions to jump ahead at the end of the first frame. The first score game by the legs of
Donovan Ganges plunging in from six yards out. The second came by the air, as
Matt Hersch connected with wide receiver
Jack Sawyer on a slant that went 45 yards to the end zone.
Bowdoin was able to score its second tally of the match halfway through the second quarter on a one-yard plunge, set up by a play-action pass that put the Polar Bears behind Colby's secondary and down at the one. The two opponents went into halftime knotted at 14.
The second half proved to be a battle of field position and ball control. Combining for 36 total yards in the third quarter, neither squad could find momentum to put points on the board. The Mules came the closest, taking a third quarter drive to the Bowdoin half of the field to the Polar Bear 25-yard line before being backed up by a penalty and a sack. The hosts took their second possession of the fourth quarter for the decisive score, moving ahead for good 21-14. Bowdoin's average starting field position in the second half was almost midfield (Bowdoin 45-yard line) while Colby averaged its drive starts at their own 23-yard line.
Bowdoin amassed 180 yards on the ground on 52 carries, only attempting 11 passes throughout the contest. Hersch was 18-33 from the pocket for Colby for 163 yards, collecting 22 yards on the ground. Running back
Keon Smart ran for 42 yards on the ground and led the Mules with seven receptions through the air. Linebackers
Locksley Burke,
Luke D'Aloia, and
Marc Dougherty led the way defensively with eight tackles apiece.
Colby, Bates, and Bowdoin each end their seasons with a 1-1 record in CBB play.
