Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Women's Basketball Dominates Against Conn College

Waterville, Maine - Colby Women's Basketball resumed their season on Friday in their second NESCAC match against the Connecticut College Camels. The Mules had a dominant showing, maintaining their substantial lead throughout the quarters to beat the Camels 66-51.

The Camels opened the game with a three-pointer in the first 30 seconds, putting the first numbers on the scoreboard. After various turnovers, Carly Christofori '22 responded with another three-pointer to tie up the game. Chiamaka Ubani '22 shortly followed up with a layup to establish the Mules' unbreakable lead. Following a strong defensive period in which both the Camels and Mules made various successful steals, rebounds, and turnovers, the Mules entered the second quarter with a score of 13-19. The second followed a similar tone to the first, with most action occurring on defense rather than offense; in the span of nearly six minutes, only two points were scored total. Nevertheless, the Mules proved the dominant team, holding the Camels to 2 points in the quarter and widening their lead to 15 points. Adaobi Nebuwa '24 and Ubani paved the way, with Nebuwa scoring eight points and Ubani five of the team's 16 points in the quarter.

The Camels found it increasingly difficult to close the gap set by the Mules in the second half of the game. Throughout the third quarter, the Camels never trailed by less than 13 points. Caroline Smith '24 and Carter McGloon '24 led the offense in the quarter, scoring six and five of the quarters 21 points, respectively. Nebuwa and Ubani once again assisted with four points each. The Mules coupled their strength at the net with more strong defense, holding the Camels to 15 points in the quarter and leading the Mules into the final period with a 21 point lead. The Camels fought back in the final period, for the first time outscoring the Mules. This, however, was not enough to close the early lead set by the Mules.

The game ended with a final score of 66-51. Defense proved to be crucial in this game, with 18 of the Mules' points being achieved off turnovers and 10 second chance points. Christofori and Nebuwa led the team in rebounds, with 10 and seven, respectively. Ubani and Sophie Webb '23 led in steals, making three each. Nebuwa and Ubani led the team in points scored, landing 16 and 15, respectively.

Colby Women's Basketball is next set to face the Trinity College Bantams on Saturday, January 8 at 3PM.
