Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Mules Fall to Bantams in Overtime

Waterville, Maine - Colby Women's Basketball faced the Trinity College Bantams in their second game of the NESCAC season. The Mules and the Bantams competed neck and neck, carrying the game into overtime. Eventually, the Mules fell to the Bantams, with a final score of 50-52.

The game started off with a tight first quarter. The Mules and the Bantams fought closely, keeping their scores within two points of one another, but the Mules scored a late lead in the quarter with a free throw from Caroline Smith '24 followed by a three-pointer by Carter McGloon '24. The Mules carried this momentum early into the second quarter, landing consecutive layups and free throws to widen their lead to six in the third minute. The Bantams fought back, though, tying up the game with a free throw at the eighth minute of the quarter. McGloon responded with a layup in the paint to bring the Mules into the second half with a two point lead.

The Bantams fought back early in the second half with a jumper in the first thirty seconds to close the Mules' lead. The third quarter proceeded to follow a slower pace, with only a three-pointer scored by the Bantams until the final minutes. The Bantams reignited the momentum in the second to last minute of the quarter with two successful free throws followed by a layup off of a rebound. The Mules answered with a three-pointer by McGloon and a layup by Chiamaka Ubani '22, but it wasn't enough to stifle the lead set by the Bantams. While it seemed that the Bantams may have secured their dominance early in the fourth quarter, putting up the sole three points scored in the first two minutes, a jumper by Smith in the third minute propelled the Mules toward a comeback. The Bantams initially answered with successful free throws and a three-pointer to bring their lead to nine points, but the Mules once again fought back, rallying ten points while holding the Bantams to four, and tying up the game at 45-45.

The Mules got off to a strong start in the overtime period. Two successful free throws by Smith and a layup by Carly Christofori '22 asserted an early lead for the Mules, which was then closed to one point by a Bantam three-pointer. The period remained scoreless until the clock read 34 seconds, when Smith made another free throw to bring the Mules' lead to two. It wasn't until the final seven seconds that the Bantams rallied to land a jumper and a layup to close the Mules' lead and gain their own. The game ended with a final score of 50-52.

Colby Women's Basketball is next set to travel to Middlebury College to face the Panthers on Friday, January 14 at 7 PM EST.
