Jeffersonville, Vt. - The Colby Alpine Ski Team finished the second day and the slalom portion of the St. Michaels carnival strong. Battling an inconsistent surface with firm snow on the pitch but softer snow on the bottom that deteriorated as the day went along as well as temperatures well below zero the Mules showed their grit.
Chauncey Morgan led the mules with a career best 4th place on the day moving all the way up from bib 43 and finishing as the fourth fastest collegiate skier. He was followed by Tucker Strauch with another lights-out race in 11th, his fourth consecutive Top-15 finish and first-year Patrick Coughlin who skied to 13th with a strong second run charge.
Three men in the top-15 saw the men finish in second place, one of the best team finishes in many years, recalled co-captain Chauncey Morgan.
The women's team skied strongly as well with first year Annaliese Fleck in 20th followed closely by Charlotte Maurer coming off a win at the FIS races in Waterville, skiing to 22nd and rounding out the top-30 was Cassie Lieblein in 26th. The women were eighth on the day.
As a team (Alpine and Nordic combined) the Mules finished 5th on the weekend, matching the strong result from the Colby Carnival and finishing just 26 points behind the University of New Hampshire.
The Mules will be racing across New England in the coming week at local FIS races before heading to Stowe for the University of Vermont Carnival on February 4th and 5th.
