The Colby men's soccer squad had home field advantage on Saturday against Tufts and managed to tie (1-1) against the Jumbos. An exciting day for the Mules to tie visiting Jumbos who are ranked number one in the country for division III men's soccer.
Aiden O'Brian took the early initiative for Colby with a shot on goal, but was blocked. This did not deter the Mules who kept testing Tuft's goalkeeper. After remaining scoreless for 30 minutes, both Colby and Tufts teams decided to switch it up and subbed in new players. This new energy benefited Colby, and Justin Lauer scored for the Mules, bringing the score to 1-0. As Tufts regrouped, the Mules were on high alert and successfully defended against the Jumbos until the end of the first half.
In the second half, the Jumbos continued their attack, testing Colby's defensive abilities, several corner kicks and shots-on-goal by the Jumbos were blocked. The tides turned for the Mules, and Justin Lauer and Ethan Fabricant had shots on goal, but were both wide. The Jumbos answered back and Biagio Paoletta assisted by Travis Van Brewer were able to even the score to 1-1. This did not deter Brendan McCarthy (pictured left), the Mules goalkeeper, who saved a shot by Van Brewer only minutes afterwards.
With the score tied, teams went into double overtime. Both overtime periods were dominated by Tufts, who had several shots on goal and corner kicks. The Mules were successful in defending their home field, as they left the match with a tie.
The Mules face off again on September 28th against the University of New England.
