Mules Come Out on Top Against Cross-Town Rivals

Waterville, Maine - Today's double header matchup was played between cross-town rivals, the Colby College Mules and the Thomas College Terriers on Coombs Field. The first of the two games began at 4 PM and the second began at around 6PM. The temperature was about thirty degrees with little to no wind and had a safe and social distant turnout of about seventy-five fans.  The Mules swept the double-header winning both games 7-0.

Although the Terriers showed potential in certain areas of tonight's contests, their errors as a team would construct a deficit too large for them to overcome. The Mule offense took advantage of these errors and used heads up base running to earn the majority of their runs. Caleb Jung's (12) three stolen bases kept the Mules energized and in scoring position all night long. Jung would go one for one on the day hitting with a sacrifice fly and a base hit resulting in an RBI. Brady O'Brien (8) was also a major impact player in this game, going two for four with a walk and a sacrifice fly. After several walks from a struggling Dylan Copeland (4) on the bump for the Terriers, O'Brien was able to walk right across home plate, and another error by Terrier's third baseman Shane MacNeill (50), would allow for the Mules to score another unearned run.

Ryan Kappelman (35) of the Terriers tried to give his team a spark starting off the next inning with a booming double, but his efforts would not lead to more runs as the Mule infield remained disciplined and efficient. Later on, more errors from the Terriers would load up the bases for the Mules and Cole Palmeri (9) would knock in another run with an RBI single. Dominant pitching from Mules ace right hander Jack Pletter (45) continued throughout the game earning him the win. Jung and the Mules would cement their victory off a stolen base leading to an error, allowing Cabot Maher (24) to score. That would be the final run of the contest as the Mule infield refused to make any mistakes. The game wrapped up after seven innings, the final score was 7-0, and Colby was able to get their fifth win over Thomas on the year, and the first of the double header.

The second game of the double header went much like the first. Colby's stolen bases combined with the errors and overall poor play from the Terriers, resulted in heavy advantages for the Mules. Daniel May (6) started off the second inning with something not often seen in baseball, a hat trick of hit batters. Loading the bases, May would then walk two batters giving the Mules two more runs. After a dominant inning on the mound by Frank Driscoll (27), the Mules would hit the top of the order. They had their chance to expand their lead, and they wouldn't need to do much. Ryan Scepansky (49) of the Terriers would hit another batter and give up two crucial walks to give the Mules three more runs making the score five to zero. An error by the Terrier shortstop Bradly Smith (46), and a sacrifice fly from Matt Panker (19) would tack on two more runs for the Mules, making this contest even more one-sided. Lefty Teddy Durbin (39) would put the Terriers away and close out the victory for the Mules with a strikeout.

The next matchup for the Mules will be against University of Southern Maine on Tuesday, April 6th at 5PM in Portland Maine. As always masks are mandatory and social distancing must be maintained at all team events.
