Softball Wins Double-Header Against Thomas

Waterville, Maine - The Colby College Softball team swept a double header over in-town rivals Thomas College on a beautiful afternoon on Mayflower Hill.  The final score in the first game was 11-3  by mercy rule in the 5th. The Mules won the second game 14-0, with this one ending early in the 5th inning as well.

The Colby College Mules controlled this contest from the beginning, but the middle innings would prove to be west they did the most damage. Sam Ahlholm (10) started at pitcher for the Mules and had a dominating performance giving up only two earned runs, a few walks, and clocking six crucial strikeouts. The first two innings were a gridlock. Colby's infield did an excellent job on defense fielding three successful outs , while Ahlholm delivered three strikeouts. The Mule offense started cold in the first inning, but soon they started to figure out Kelsey Currier's pitches. After a walk from Currier, a sacrifice fly from Lolo Niemiec (3) would allow Ashley Ketchum (5) to score putting the Mules up 1-0. Laticia Billings (7) of the Terriers would come out of the third with a big double. But after stealing third and getting in scoring position, she'd be thrown out at home by Niemic after getting caught in a "pickle", causing the inning to end.

In the bottom of the 4th, the Mules would show no signs of letting up. A 2-run shot to deep center from Jackie Hill (7), directly followed by a solo shot from Niemic would put the Mules up 8-0 with back to back home run swings. The Terriers would not give up, and a rally in the top of the 5th fueled by hits from Madison Rock (12), Currier, and Chantel Ouellette (22), would score three runs and help soften the blow of the loss. But a double from Brooke Niemic (00) and a triple from Ketchum, in the bottom of the 5th, would add three runs to the Mule lead and end the contest by mercy rule.

The Mules dominated the second game of the doubleheader with a 14-0 victory over the Thomas College Terriers. Their second consecutive mercy rule victory of the afternoon. Payton Crowley (6) of Colby pitched the lights out, and the Terriers just couldn't generate any good contact with her throws. Giving up only one hit, Crowley's pitch speed caused the terriers to ground out and fly out often, giving them no momentum. By not committing any errors, the Colby infield made solid plays, and the ball rarely made it to the outfield. Along with Crowley's seasoned pitching, the Mule offense also showed up again ready to play in game two.

When asked about the offensive power today, Coach Terren Allen said, "Today's wins were a collective team effort. Our hitters worked tirelessly this week on offensive execution and controlling their at bats, moving runners in scoring position, and preforming under pressure. Today's offensive numbers were a direct reflection on their hard work and determination for success."

The Mules will play another double-header next weekend at home versus Trinity.
