Outdoor Facility Highlight 4: Baseball and Softball Complex

Waterville, MAINE - Throughout the Second Semester, Colby Athletics will be running a series on our outdoor venues.  Each Field/stadium/venue offers a multitude of specific advantages to maximize the capacity of our varsity programs, and it's time for you to get to know them.

VOLUME 4 - Baseball and Softball Complex

A state-of-the-art facility, the Baseball and Softball Complex opened for the 2015-16 season, making Colby the first NESCAC program to feature synthetic turf fields for both sports.

Coombs Field, the artificial turf baseball field named for legendary major league pitcher "Colby Jack" Coombs, Class of 1906, replicates the original baseball field that was in the same location. The softball field was relocated next to the baseball diamond on Mayflower Hill Drive and additional amenities were added to complete the Complex.

The Complex also features on-grade heated dugouts, LED scoreboards, elevated bleachers behind home plate, and public restrooms.

Colby's club and intramural sports programs also enjoy access to both fields.  They may be scheduled for use by local youth programs and regional tournaments, providing new opportunities for Colby to support athletes in the greater Waterville community.

Terren Allen"Having a synthetic turf field in Maine coupled with an enclosed heated batting pavilion provides our student athletes with the ability to train outside year round. Our facilities deliver the benefit of rarely canceling games due to weather issues which result in more home competitions." - Terren Allen, Head Softball Coach

jesse woods"The Colby College Baseball/Softball Complex is a game changer for our program. The turf field keeps us from competing with Mother Nature and allows us to focus on what we do best - player development and student athlete experience. Our pavilion allows our student athletes year round offensive and defensive development. The lights, the dugouts, the storage and all the other amenities at the complex, we have it all. Facilities play a critical role in student experience and our complex gives us an unmatched experience." - Jesse Woods, Head Baseball Coach
