Waterville, Maine - The Mules may have been exhausted from a long weekend of back to back games, but the team showed up today for senior
Wallace Tucker (55). In his final home game the Mules were able to beat the St. Joseph's Monks 96-80 leaving the team 4-0 this season. Given the opportunity to play some games, the Mules fueled their passion for the game and hard work over the last few months into a fun weekend with decisive wins, all while celebrating the contributions Tucker has made to the program over his four years at Colby.
#55 Wallace Tucker '21
Colby came out with fire in their eyes. The team was able to secure a 53-39 lead over the Monks by the end of the first half. This was possible with Tucker hitting five early threes during his final home game after a spectacular career. Tucker had Colby's first 12 points, helping them establish an early cushion they maintained through the majority of the first half. Tucker ended the first half with 15 points, all from his 8 three point attempts.
Alec McGovern (21) also led the charge offensively with 15 points including four three pointers, and finally
Will King (14) led the team with 4 assists helping setting up key three pointers. Colby's three point shooting was spectacular making their offense look almost effortless with a shooting percentage of 50%. There was outstanding play from all angles.
Jonah Obi (25) had the standout defensive play of the half with a destructive yet surgical block to help maintain Colby's lead along with
David Basich's (41) behind the back pass to McGovern for a late three putting Colby over 50 points for the half. With that pace, Colby could have scored the icing on the cake to Tucker's last home game.
The beginning of the second half was rather uneventful. Colby's offense cooling down, but a stalwart defense preventing St. Joseph's from closing the lead too much. Basich had a standout play displaying hustle on a key one v. one drive limiting the Monks' attempt at an offensive surge. After the first 7 minutes Colby's offense came back to life with key three pointers from King and
Henry Westrich (23).
Henry Pohle (42) also had a momentum building three pointer late in the second half. To cap off a wonderful career, Tucker received a standing ovation when he was subbed out after scoring a team leading 23 points and leading Colby to victory one last time. Standout players other than Wallace include Westrich with 16 points with a three point shooting percentage of 80%, McGovern with 20 points on 14 attempts, King with a team leading four steals, and
Cooper Wirkala (5) with a team leading seven rebounds. Overall, Colby's strong 44% three point shooting percentage allowed them to run up the score and give Tucker one last home win.
For now, that's the last game this squad will play together, but the happiness and gratitude for that opportunity has been clear in the games they were able to play and dominate in–an excitement that will likely carry into next season. As Tucker hangs up his jersey for the last time, we hope he looks back on his career as a Mule with pride and joy for his strong contributions on and off the court.
