Waterville, MAINE- Colby hosted the 5-1 University of Maine Farmington yesterday, December 8th. The game tipped off at 7:00 PM and was exciting from the very first touch.
The Mules quickly jumped ahead and mostly maintained the early lead throughout the half, ending up with a 36-34 advantage heading into the second. The lead can once again be attributed to shooting from beyond the arc, as Colby shot 8-19 while UMF was only able to hit one three on six attempts. The Mules were overwhelmed on the glass (16-20), but they led in most other categories; dishing out 11 assists, blocking five shots, and creating one steal.
Alec McGovern had a strong first half with 12 points, four rebounds, two blocks, and a steal. McGovern acted as Colby's best all around player in the half, making plays on both sides of the ball.
Matt Hanna also performed well as he was able to score and create plays for his teammates with ease. Hanna put up 9 points and four assists without turning the ball over and while shooting 3-5 from three.Â
The second half was more of a competition, with several lead changes. Even with
Matt Hanna coming out of halftime with two quick threes, the Mules weren't able to keep the lead. Thanks to a few fouls and missed shots, Colby Men's Basketball found themselves behind 10 with 4:24 remaining. Colby then changed the momentum, hitting three quick shots from beyond the arc, and with one point off free throws, tying the game at 69-69 with two minutes left.
Noah Tyson then hit a dagger of a three point shot, giving the Mules their first lead since early in the second half. Unfortunately UMF met this clutch three with one of their own, sending the game to overtime.Â
Will King started overtime red hot, drilling two quick threes to put Colby on top. UMF stayed competitive, even tying the game with a minute left. However, eventually the offensive onslaught from the Mules was too much, as
Noah Tyson grabbed an offensive rebound off of a missed free throw to ice the game, 86-81. Hanna once again shined in the second half, leading the team with eight points and a steal. However, it was
Will King who came up clutch in overtime, scoring nine points on 2-2 shooting from the field, as well as three point land, and 3-4 from the free throw line. King also had two rebounds in overtime.Â
In the end, four Mules had double digit scoring nights.
Matt Hanna had 19 along with two rebounds, five assists, a block, and a steal.
Will King had 14 points to pair with nine rebounds and five assists, barely missing out on a double double.
Alec McGovern and
Noah Tyson played very well on both sides of the ball. McGovern scored 14 points on 12 shots while bringing in five rebounds, blocking two shots, and forcing a steal. Tyson had 13 points, five rebounds, three assists, and a very impressive three steals.
Colby Men's Basketball will hope to make it two in a row, to improve to 7-3, when they travel to Brandeis University on Saturday, December 11th, at 3:00 PM.Â
