Brunswick, Maine – The long-awaited Bowdoin vs. Colby hockey matchup has returned. After a modified season last year due to COVID, the Mules are looking strong for a successful NESCAC season. In a low-scoring game, the Mules came away with a 2-1 win against the Polar Bears.
The first period started off strong for Colby with a power-play opportunity less than a minute into the game. Bowdoin was able to hold off the attack this time but minutes later the
Anna Staton controlled the puck down the right side, swung it to the left to
Jillian Mazzocca. Mazzocca then sent a pass to the far post where Senior Captain
Sadie Kuhn was waiting patiently to make the puck meet the back of the net. This put Colby up 1-0 against rival Bowdoin. Colby was able to hold of a counterattack by the Polar Bears until just under two minutes left in the period when Ally Thanassi deflected the puck coming through the middle to slide past Colby goalkeeper Nina Prunster.
Colby returned after the break, ready to dominate and seal a win to bring home to Mayflower Hill. Just 4:25 into the second period
Lily Wisniewski intercepted a breakout pass in the Bowdoin zone and fired a shot on cage.
Meg Rittenhouse cleaned up the loose puck on the left post and put the Mules up 2-1. The period continued with many shots taken by both teams, neither team able to capitalize despite many opportunities.
The third period showed that this game was an absolute battle. The passion on the ice was obvious, Bowdoin looking to tie the game and Colby looking to widen the lead. Neither team fouled in the third period, giving both teams the opportunity to settle into their lines and subbing. The Mules have a lot to look forward to this season as there is already so much chemistry between the young women who played together last season and those that are returning from a semester or year off due to COVID. Even though the Mules were unable to score another goal against Bowdoin, they came close many times, and were able to hold off the Bowdoin attack with strong and cohesive defense. Leaving Brunswick the Mules has secured a 2-1 win against rival Polar Bears.
On Saturday December 4
th the Polar Bears will travel to Waterville to play the Mules one more time until post season at 3:00pm in the Jack Kelley Rink for a packed home stadium. There are a few tickets left, so be sure to grab them while you can!
