Castleton, VT - The Mules travelled to meet the SUNY Potsdam Bears in Castleton on Friday December 10 for an out-of-conference match-up. The Mules dominated all three periods and came out with a 4-0 win.
In the first three minutes of the game, the Mules got seven shots off, the seventh putting them up 1-0. The first period was absolutely dominated by Colby. They controlled the pace of the game and were able to release 26 shots on Potsdam keeper Hannah Barrett. The Mules were only able to score one goal in the first period but their poise and control over the flow of the game.
Jillian Mazzocca scored the first goal for the Mules with a double-assist from
Bri Michaud-Nolan and
Madi Aumann.
The Mules went into the second period ready to give themselve a wider lead. They were successful in doing so less than three minutes into the second with a a pass from Senden to
Mattie Tremper who then sent it to
Stephanie Lane who buried the puck in the back of the net, making the score 2-0. Towards the end of the second period, Potsdam maintained possession of the puck, but Colby held them at bay with ease. Colby went into the break up 2-0.
Starting the third period, the Mules knew that 2-0 wouldn't be enough to demonstrate just how much they dominated this game and only 1:32 into the period
McKinley Karpa scored with an from
Lexi Cafiero and Michaud-Nolan. This ended the power play for the Mules and they continued to control the play. Just seven minutes later, Cafiero scored with an assist from
Klara Jandusikova. With twelve minutes left in the game, starting keeper Nina Prunster was subsituted to allow first year Mandy Bunsky her first chance at ice time with the Mules. Bunsky had a total of four saves for her first time in net for the team and helped carry the team to a decisive shutout against the SUNY Potsdam Bears.
The Mules play again on Saturday December 11th at 4pm against Castleton University and hope to bring home another win before they get a break for finals and the holidays. If Colby beats Castleton they will go into the break 6-1, an exciting start to the first season post-COVID shutdowns.
