Waterville, MAINE- Colby Men's Basketball hosted the University of Southern Maine yesterday, November 30th, at 7:00 PM. The Mules played hard, but ultimately fell to the Huskies 74-71, falling to 5-2 on the year.
The game was close all the way through, with the largest advantage being 10 points for Southern Maine. Colby fell behind because they weren't able to knock down their shots at the same pace as their opponent, shooting 30.77% from the field and 11.11% from beyond the arc to the Huskies 51.72% and incredible 62.50% in the first half. The deficit was mostly redacted in the second half, when the Mules brought the game to within three points. Part of the reason was that team shot slightly better, providing baskets on 39.02% of their attempts from the field and 17.65% from three, for a total percentage of 35.0% from the field and 14.3% from three point land. The shrinking of the lead can also be attributed to Colby's 14 points off turnovers, an excellent indicator of the Mules' ability to turn great defense into transition buckets. The Huskies were only able to get two points off of turnovers. Colby Basketball also doubled Southern Maine's bench points 18-9.
The comeback effort was largely led by
Will King and
Jack Lawson, as both players had impact on both sides of the ball. King ended the game with an efficient 20 points, shooting 9-14 and 2-2 from three, he also tallied three rebounds, three assists, two blocks, and two steals. Lawson played a similar brand of basketball to King, tallying 19 points, nine rebounds, two assists, and three blocks. The defensive efforts of
Jack Lawson and
Will King allowed the Mules to get out in transition for quick baskets, fueling the comeback and almost earning Colby a hard fought win. However, in the end the Mules fell short, falling to 5-2.
Colby Basketball will look to regain their momentum when they travel to Bates College on Friday, December 3rd, to take on the 4-1 Bobcats at 7:00 PM.
