Waterville, Maine - The Colby Men's Hockey team went toe to toe with the Babson College Beavers Sunday in the O'Neil | O'Donnell Forum on the campus of Colby College. The Mules were looking to stay in the win column, following a successful game the day before.
Colby got off to a hot start just 40 seconds in, where junior
Carter Breitenfeldt scored his first goal of the season with an assist from
Michael Morrissey. The Mules were able to hold off the Beavers for the majority of the period with strong defense in their own zone.
Clay Korpi and a Babson player got into a scuffle where both earned a two-minute roughing penalty, Korpi earning an additional two for a cross-check at 16:39 of the first period. The Beavers were able to capitalize on this momentum swing, scoring to tie the game at 1 a piece, 18:43 into the period.
Justin Grillo continued his scoring streak, scoring 6:47 into the second period, burying a rebound from Breitenfeldt (pictured left) and Morrisey to put the Mules up 2-1. The Mules continued to take shots on the Beaver goaltender, registering 14 shots in the second period. Babson took a penalty during their one power play after a
Brian Sanzone interference penalty at 14:51, giving 40 seconds of 4-on-4. After Sanzone was released from the box, the Mules were able to generate decent offensive opportunities, but were unable to find the back of the net. Babson would tie the game at 2 with one minute to play on a wrist shot at the front of the net. Colby would lead in both shots and faceoff wins this period over the Beavers.Â
Heading into the third period in a tie game, Babson was able to capitalize on a 4-on-3 power play just 1:35 into the period putting the Beavers ahead by a goal. Grillo scored his second goal of the game, his fourth in two games, to tie the game with assists credited to
Jack Sullivan and Morrisey. With the Mules now gaining control, Sullivan capitalized on the power play to put the Mules ahead 4-3 at 9:40 of the third period. However, penalties proved to be an issue for the Mules, as Babson scored on their power play to tie the game 4-4 with just under six minutes to play. Despite the Mules taking many shots on the Beaver goaltender, the Beavers were able to put themselves in the lead at 17:48 in the period and take the 5-4 lead. After
Andy Beran was pulled from net with 1:40 to go, the Mules peppered the opposing goaltender, saving the remaining shots he faced. Despite a hard fought battle, Colby would fall 5-4.Â
The Mules play again on Saturday, December 4, at 7:00 PM against Bowdoin College at the O'Neil | O'Donnell Forum inside the Harold Alfond Athletics and Recreation Center on the Jack Kelley Rink.
