Waterville, Maine- NESCAC Player of the Week Justin Grillo and the Colby Men's Hockey team faced Bowdoin in their first matchup at the Jack Kelley Rink inside the O'Neil | O'Donnell Forum on the campus of Colby College. The Mules heading into the game at 1-2-0 were looking to even out their winning percentage against the Polar Bears who were coming into the game with a 0-3-1 record
The game started with a buzz in the air, the Mules looking to take advantage of home ice early. However, two penalties within the first ten minutes of the first period would put the penalty kill to the test. The Mules were able to kill of both penalties and were registering shots on the Polar Bear goaltender. Junior Jake Klein scored his first goal of the season 18:48 into the first on an assist from John McElaney, his first of the season to put the Mules up 1-0 heading into the second period.
Bowdoin started the second period strong, scoring a power play goal to tie the game at one goal apiece just 1:11 into the period. The Mules were able to draw several penalties against the Polar Bears, with Jack Sullivan scoring a power play goal at 8:54, his second goal of the year, with assists being credited to Michael Morrissey and Carter Breitenfeldt. Strong possession by the Mules would keep them in the 2-1 lead heading into the final period, despite Klein's penalty with 46 seconds remaining in the period.
Heading into the third on the penalty kill, the Mules were once again able to kill the penalty, not allowing a Bowdoin shot to reach goaltender Andy Beran. The Mules consistently put pressure on Bowdoin tonight, with Grillo scoring an empty net goal at 18:27 of the period, his fifth of the season, assisted by Breitenfeldt to close out the game with a 3-1 win.
The Mules next play Friday, December 10, at 7:00 PM against Tufts University in Medford, Massachusetts.
