Game Recap: Men's Ice Hockey |

Mules Top Wentworth for First Win of 2021-22

Brunswick, Maine- The Colby Men's Hockey team headed down to Bowdoin College to play Wentworth Institute of Technology in the Bowdoin/Colby Face-Off. The Mules were looking to finally get into the win column against Leopards, their first of the season.

The Mules got off to a hot start in the first period, drawing a penalty only 1:19 into the game. Although the Mules were not able to capitalize on this opportunity, they showed how dangerous their power play could be, a foreshadow to later in the period. 11:48 into the first period, Senior Quinn Doyle scored the Mules' first goal of the season, assisted by Alex Bourhas and Jake MacDonald. Just over a minute later the Mules would draw another penalty from the Leopards at 12:52, and a slashing penalty at 13:51, allowing for a 5 on 3 opportunity for the Mules. Sophomore Jack Sullivan scored from the top of the right face off circle from a feed from Justin Grillo and Michael Thomas. Andy Beran faced only five shots in the period, saving them all to keep the score at 2-0 Mules heading into the second period.

Heading into the second period, the Mules were able to kill off the interference penalty taken by MacDonald at 19:59 of the first period. Just nineteen seconds after the successful penalty kill, Justin Grillo scored on a feed from Sullivan and Drew Burke at 2:18 into the second to put the Mules up 3-0. The Leopards had most of the possession for the next six minutes, before Michael Morrissey put in a feed from Carter Breitenfeldt and Sullivan to go up 4-0. The Mules were given another opportunity on the power play 11:06 into the period, but were unable to convert. 13:20 into the period, the Leopards were able to put one past Beran, making the score 4-1 at the end of the third period.

thomasThe Mules started the third period off against the Leopards by once again wearing down the opposing netminder. Thomas (pictured left) got his first goal of the season at 8:22 into the period, unassisted, on the power play, bringing the Mules to a 5-1 lead. Shortly after, however, the Leopards would answer with a goal of their own cutting the deficit to three goals. Grillo would add his second goal of the game just three minutes after Thomas's goal to bring the score 6-2. The Mules played very well despite having twelve days in between their games. Beran would let in one more goal, but Jalen Kaplan would finish out the game with an empty net goal, securing the 7-3 win.

Thomas and Grillo led the team with four shots each this game. Grillo also led the game having two goals of his own, and Sullivan led with two assists. Beran made 17 saves on 20 shots, bringing his overall record to 1-1 on the season.

The Mules play again Sunday, November 28, at 4:00 PM against Babson College in the O'Neil | O'Donnell Forum at Colby College.
