Waterville, ME - Colby Women's Basketball faced the Colby-Sawyer Chargers in the opening round of the Colby Tip Off Classic. The Mules had an assertive showing, defeating the Chargers with a final score of 69-44.
The Mules came out flying in the first quarter with an initial unanswered run of 12 points, with key threes by Natalia Gonyea '25 and Caroline Smith '24. Despite some pushback from the Chargers, the Mules dominated the quarter, entering the second with a score of 22-10. The dominance continued in the second quarter with good ball movement, aggressive defense, and accurate shooting from beyond the three point line, lending to a 43-22 Colby lead. Standouts in the first half for the Mules include Gonyea with 11 points and Keagan Dunbar '22 with 9 points. Dunbar and Carter McGloon '24 both led the team with four rebounds, while Carly Christofori '22 led the way in passing with 3 assists and 3 pivotal steals. For the Chargers, Gabby Lucertini had a team leading 8 points to keep Colby-Sawyer somewhat in the game.
As expected, the Mules maintained their dominance in the third quarter, extending their lead to 30 points for some time and ending the quarter with a score of 65-39. Alexis Semidey-Martinez '25 had a standout performance with several key baskets to maintain Colby's momentum, as Gonyea and Dunbar added three and five points respectively to continue leading the Mules.
Colby finished out strong with a dominant fourth quarter leading to their fourth win of the season. Martinez's block midway through the fourth quarter displayed Colby's tenacious defense and ultimately their convincing victory. Gonyea and Dunbar led the way with 14 points with McGloon and Semidey-Martinez trailing with 12 and 10 respectively. Defensively, Chiamaka Ubani '22 led the way with four steals and McGloon had a team-leading 7 rebounds. For the Chargers, Gabby Lucertini led the team with 12 points and Emily Parent was close behind with 10.
Colby Women's Basketball is looking to continue their winning streak tomorrow against UMass Boston in the second round of the Colby Tip Off Tournament. The teams will face at 4 PM on Sunday, November 20.
