Biddeford, Maine- Colby Women's Basketball had their first game of the season in the University of New England Tip Off Tournament, facing the UNE Nor'easters in the first round. In a close game, the Mules emerged victorious with a final score of 61-60.
The first half of the game took a slower pace for the Mules, with many back and forths between the two teams carried by various rebounds and steals. The first quarter ended with a total score of 5-7, with points scored by Adaobi Nebuwa '24 and Keagan Dunbar '22. The Nor'easters picked up the pace in the second quarter, tallying up an additional 15 points to bring the score to 14-22 at the end of the half.
The Mules fought back in the second half, with Natalia Gonyea '25 shooting a three-pointer to tie the game at 28-28 in the 5th minute of the half. Entering the final quarter with a score of 40-41, the fate of the game remained a nail-biter as the Mules and Nor'easters continued to exchange the lead. With seconds remaining and the Mules clinging to a four-point lead, UNE landed a three-pointer to close the game to one. The Mules converted a successful inbound and ended the game.
The game ended with a final score of 61-60. Dunbar and Nebuwa led the way to the victory, scoring 16 and 12 points, respectively. The team's strong defense also helped to carry the Mules, with nearly half of their points being scored off turnovers.
Colby Women's Basketball is next set to face Nazareth College in the second round of the UNE Tip Off Tournament on November 14 at 1:00 PM.
