Williamstown, Mass. – The Colby Mules traveled to Williamstown to try and pick up their second win of the season against the Williams College Ephs. Williams was able to score early and pull away from Colby 42-0 to remain undefeated and move to 4-0 as Colby falls to 1-3.
Colby came into this game trying to bounce back against a strong Williams team after last week's loss to Hamilton. Williams came out hot and never looked back. They were able to put together a quick three-play drive to score early in the first with a deep throw for a 45-yard touchdown, jumping out 7-0. Colby looked to answer quickly and was able to drive the field all the way into the red zone thanks to strong running from first-year
Keon Smart. In fourth-down territory, the Mules were unable to convert a 4th and 1, and were turned over on downs. Williams got the ball back, but only for a moment as
Javon Williams came up with his first interception of the season. Unable to find the end zone, Colby was content to end the first quarter securing field position and pinning the Ephs deep in their own end.
Williams College showed why they are one of the top teams in the NESCAC this season, proving unstoppable in the second quarter. Four rushing scores from four different ball carriers paced their second frame and stretched their lead before half. Quarterback Bobby Maimaron solidified his place as one of the top offensive threats in the league, ranking third in rushing and fourth in passing. At the half, the score was 35-0 in favor of the hosts.
The second was a matter of clock control for Williams and attempting to move the chains for the Mules. Colby was able to piece together a 13-play drive in their first possession of the third quarter, driving all the way to the Williams 8-yd line, picking up four first downs along the way. The Ephs stiffened at the goal line, and secured their first shutout of the season. Nine different Williams players recorded a carry in the contest, led by Maron Fischetti with nine carries for 113 yards and a touchdown. Colby was paced by Smart with 42 rushing yards as well as three receptions out of the backfield.
Will Nipon and
Nick Donatio led the team with nine tackles each, adding on to the great seasons they are both having.
The Mules return home next week to play Middlebury on Saturday, October 16 at 1:00 pm.
