Waterville, Maine – The Colby Mules coming off a win at home hosted the Trinity Bantams. Trinity pulled out a 35-12 victory to improve to 6-0 while the Mules fell to 2-4.
Colby won the toss and deferred, giving Trinity the ball to start the game. The defense came out strong, forcing an early punt. After trading short drives, Colby got the ball late in the first and was able to drive down the field thanks to big plays by
Jack Sawyer and
Matt Hersch.
Keon Smart quickly punched in the touchdown to give the Mules a 6-0 lead. The defense didn't skip a beat.
Locksley Burke forced a fumble recovered by
Mark Kassis to get the ball right back.
Colby drove deep into Trinity territory but came up inches short of a fourth down conversion. Thanks to a forceful defense they got the ball back quickly. Keon had multiple big plays and ultimately punched in his second touchdown of the game to make it 12-0. Trinity got the ball back and put together a long drive. They got inside the Colby 5-yard line needing only a yard for a first down. In one of the most suspenseful sequences of the year, Colby made a massive fourth-down stop to go into the half up 12 and fired up.
The second half started off very slow, but Trinity quickly changed the momentum. They drove all the way down the field and were able to get a quick touchdown to cut the lead down to 5. Colby coughed the ball up quickly in their own half and Trinity cashed in on the field position, scoring another touchdown and taking a 14-12 lead. Colby tried to get back into the game but couldn't convert on a 39-yard field goal to take the lead.
Trinity didn't slow down and were able to get back into the end zone on a deep touchdown pass. DeVante Reid had a great game for the Bantams, hauling in 9 receptions for 113 yards. Colby kept firing on offense but couldn't get back on the board.
Will Nipon had another great game, eclipsing eight tackles for the fourth time this year and being the first Mule to double-digit tackles (10 total tackles, 7 solo, and 3 assisted) in a game.
Trinity caught fire in the second half and didn't look back. Colby played great in the first half against one of the best teams in the NESCAC, though, which is a great sign. They travel to Lewiston next week to play Bates on Saturday, October 30th at 1:00 pm.
