The Mules season ends, Seniors leave their mark

Hoboken, N.J. – The Colby College Men's Basketball team's season came to an end after the Christopher Newport University Captains took down the Mules 74-64 in the first round of the NCAA Division III tournament. it was a remarkable seaon for Colby and a huge turnaround for the seniors who as freshman didn't win a game in-conference.

GAME NOTES

  • This was Colby's first trip to the NCAA Division III tournament since 1997 and showed that they were up for the task. The Captains and Mules battled back and forth to start the first half trading leads and ties throughout. Christopher Newport would take the largest lead of the game at the 3:44 mark when they were up 24-16.  The Captains would grow that lead and take a 32-17 lead into halftime. Colby was able to chip away at the lead and get to within 11 points with 5:44 to play. The Mules would use that momentum to bring the score to 61-56 in favor of Christopher Newport with just under two minutes to play. That is as close as the Mules would get as the Captains were able to knock down a few late buckets to seal the 74-64 victory.

HIGHLIGHTS FOR THE MULES

  • Colby had 3 players score in double figures with Wallace Tucker (photo insert) leading the way with 13 points shooting 5-10 from the field. He also pulled down five rebounds.
  • Noah Tyson and Alex Dorion each had 12 points for the Mules
  • Dean Weiner ended with eight points off the bench and hauled in seven rebounds. 

HIGHLIGHTS FOR THE CAPTAINS

  • Christopher Newport was led by Luther Gibbs and Adrian Beasley, each scoring 13 points. They each also had seven rebounds.
  • Dalon Mchugh II pitched in with 11 points and seven rebounds while Liam Harrington added 10 points and five rebounds.
  • Cutch Ellis had nine points and Jason Aigner added eight.  

KEY STATS

  • Sam Jefferson and Matt Hanna each end the season with over 400 total points scoring 445 and 420, respectively. 
  • Tyson finished with a team leading 236 rebounds on the year while King had 152 assists to lead the Mules. 
  • Ty Williams led Colby with a total of 37 steals.

NEXT MATCHUP

  • The Mules end their season with a 24-4 overall record and an 8-2 in conference record.
