Colby to play for NESCAC title after 65-61 comeback win over Amherst

  • Medford, Mass. - The Colby College Men's Basketball team moved on to the NESCAC Championship game after 65-61 victory over the Amherst College Mammoths.

    GAME NOTES

    • The remaining rounds of the NESCAC tournament are being held at Tufts University. The #3 Mammoths and #2 Mules played the second semifinal game of the night for the right to play on Sunday, 3/1 for the conference championship. Amherst jumped out to a 10-0 lead to start the game but Colby was able to cut the deficit to three points with 5:44 to play in the first half. The Mammoths and Mules would trade buckets the remainder of the half as Amherst would take a 38-32 into halftime. The Mules would start the second half on an 8-0 run and get their first lead of the game with 15:50 to play by a score of 40-38. Colby would find themselves down by five with six minutes to play but Matt Hanna and Noah Tyson would hit a pair of three point shots to give the Mules a four point lead with just over two minutes to play. Colby would hold on to the lead and take a 65-61 victory.

    HIGHLIGHTS FOR THE MULES

    • Hanna led all scorers with 22 points. He shot 8-18 from the field and pulled down five rebounds.
    • Tyson ended the night with a double-double with 15 points and 13 rebounds.
    • Dean Weiner also added a double-double of his own in the win with 14 points and 10 rebounds. He went 6-8 from the field.

    HIGHLIGHTS FOR THE MAMMOTHS

    • Amherst also had four players score in double figures with Eric Sellew leading the way with 13 points. He shot 5-9 from the field and had eight rebounds.
    • Grant Robinson and Garrett Day each ended with 12 points while Tim McCarthy pitched in 10 points.

    KEY STATS

    • The Mules look to get their first NESCAC Championship in program history.
    • Colby had 30 points in the paint while Tufts ended with 20 points.

    NEXT MATCHUP

    • Colby will play Tufts University Sunday, March 1 at 2:30 PM for a shot at the NESCAC Championship.
