WATERVILLE, Maine -- Colby College's seniors came up big on senior day in the Mules' 18-7 win over Williams College in a key NESCAC women's lacrosse game Saturday at Bill Alfond Field.
Four teams -- Colby, Williams, Hamilton and Bates -- came into Saturday with 2-5 league records. The Mules and Hamilton left with 3-5 records, while Bates was idle. Colby, if the season ended Saturday, would be the eighth seed in the NESCAC playoffs.
By the numbers
* The seniors put up big numbers in a game 15th-ranked Colby (7-5 overall) had to win. Kendall Smith (pictured right) had six goals and three assists, while fellow senior Sasha Fritts (pictured right) had five goals and one assist.
* Colby senior defender Jackie Brokaw had five ground balls and four caused turnovers. Senior midfielder Maddie Hatch scored, had five ground balls, and three caused turnovers.
* Sophomore defender Melinda Edie led all players with five caused turnovers and four ground balls. Kelsey Otley added two caused turnovers.
* Grace Langmuir had two goals and two assists for Colby. Emma Banks added two goals and one assist, while Grace Crowell and Kate Burkett each had one goal.
* Emma Tenbarge had four goals, 10 draw controls, and four ground balls for the Ephs (5-7, 2-6 NESCAC). Kara Wollmers had the other three goals for Williams.
* Claire Fitzpatrick had two assists, four draw controls, four ground balls, and two caused turnovers for the Ephs.
* Colby goaltender Izzy Scribano had seven of her 11 saves in the second half while playing 57:20. Mule senior Sam Burch played the final 2:40 and was not credited with a stop.
* Kami Cisneros stopped seven shots, had three caused turnovers, and three ground balls in net for Williams. Ana Alvarenga played the final 17:10 and made two saves.
* The Mules were 7-for-12 on free-position attempts, while the Ephs were just 1-for-8.
Game highlights* Colby got off to a terrific start and led 4-0 after 10:46 of action on two goals from Fritts, one from Smith, and another from Langmuir.
* Williams chipped away at the lead behind the play of Tenbarge and Wollmers. Trailing 6-3, the Ephs scored three straight goals in a span of less than four minutes to tie the game at 6-6 with 1:33 to halftime.
* DeWan was inserted to take the draw controls and she helped change the momentum around. The Mules scored two goals in the final 27 seconds to take an 8-6 halftime lead. DeWan won a draw and had the assist on Smith's goal with 19 seconds remaining.
* Colby's defense held Williams to just one goal in the second half. Meanwhile, the Mules' offense steadily pulled away in the half. Smith played a part in five straight goals to help the Mules break the 6-6 tie and take an 11-6 margin.
* Colby seniors Kelsey Bowen, Brokaw, Burch, Fritts, Hatch, Rebecca Moore, Hannah Newhall, and Smith were honored before Saturday's game.
* The Mules do have one more home game, but the contest is this Tuesday against University of Southern Maine at 5:30 p.m. Colby closes out the regular season with big league games at Trinity College (April 21) and Bates College (April 25).
