Men's basketball fights back from big deficit to nearly beat Bobcats

LEWISTON, Maine -- Despite 23 points from Sam Jefferson, the Colby College men's basketball team fell behind early and lost 83-76 to Bates College in NESCAC play Saturday at Alumni Gym.

The Mules drop to 7-5 overall and 0-2 in the conference, while Bates is 8-6 and 1-1 in the league.
 
By the numbers
* Jefferson was 7-for-12 from the field and was 4-for-8 from 3-point range.
 
* Dean Weiner also was 7-for-12 from the field on the way to 19 points, 11 rebounds, and three blocked shots. Wallace Tucker finished with 11 points and Sean Gilmore added nine.
 
* Nick Lynch shot 9-for-13 from the field for 20 points for the Bobcats.
 
* The Mules had a 42-33 rebounding advantage, but Bates had just 13 turnovers and made 10 steals.
 
Game highlights
* Bates had a 30-7 lead and took a 41-27 margin into halftime. However, the Mules roared back and took a 54-52 lead when Jefferson hit three free throws with 11:45 left in the game.
 
* The Bobcats took the lead for good when James Mortimer hit a free throw for a 57-56 lead with 9:30 remaining.
 
* Colby cut the Bates lead to 69-68 when Weiner scored inside with 2:46 to play. Shawn Strickland hit a deep three to push the margin to 72-68.
