Men's basketball fights back only to fall in overtime

WATERVILLE, Maine -- The Colby College men's basketball team came from eight points down in the final minutes to send the game to overtime, but Hamilton College pulled away in the extra session for a 76-67 NESCAC win Saturday.

The Continentals improved to 17-2 overall and 4-2 in the league, while the Mules dropped to 10-9 and 1-5 in conference play.
 
By the numbers
* Matt Hanna led Colby with 17 points on 6-for-11 shooting, six rebounds, and four assists. 
 
* Sean Gilmore was 7-for-12 from the field for 16 points, while Sam Jefferson added 15 points. Steven Daley made four of his five shots for eight points and pulled down a team-high nine rebounds.
 
* Michael Grassey had 18 points, including a big 3-point shot in overtime, and eight rebounds for Hamilton. Jack Dwyer had six points, two assists, and two steals in overtime.
 
* Kena Gilmour added 15 points and nine rebounds, while Tim Doyle had 13 points and three assists. Andrew Groll came off the bench and finished with eight points and a game-high 11 rebounds.
 
* Both teams finished with 13 assists and 16 turnovers. The Continentals had a slight 50-45 rebounding edge.
 
Game highlights
* Colby entered the overtime session with all the momentum after scoring the final eight points of regulation to tie the game at 58-58. The Mules trailed 58-50 when Grassey hit a jump shot with 3:50 left in the second half.
 
* Sean Gilmore scored on three straight baskets, the final coming with 53 seconds remaining to cut the margin to 58-56. After a missed jumper by Hamilton, Hanna tied the game with two free throws with 9.8 seconds remaining. The Continentals missed a 3-point shot at the buzzer.
 
* With the score 62-62 in overtime, Doyle hit a 3-point shot to put Hamilton up for good. Groll scored inside to push the lead to 67-62, but Hanna answered back with a drive to the basket. Grassey hit his 3-point shot for a 70-64 lead with 1:28 remaining.
