Men's basketball earns NESCAC victory over Trinity, 61-51

WATERVILLE, Maine -- Dean Weiner and Sam Jefferson both had double-doubles in scoring and rebounding for the Colby College men's basketball team in a 61-51 victory over Trinity College in NESCAC play Sunday at Wadsworth Gymnasium.

The Mules came out with defensive intensity from the opening tip in moving to 10-5 overall and 1-2 in the conference. The Bantams, who took a win at Bowdoin College on Friday, dropped to 11-4 and 2-2 in the league.
 
By the numbers
* Weiner (pictured) nearly had a triple-double with 11 points, 13 rebounds, and a collegiate-high eight blocked shots. Jefferson finished with a game-high 15 points, pulled down 11 rebounds, and shot 3-for-7 from 3-point range.
 
* Alex Dorion came off the bench with 14 points on 5-for-5 shooting from the field and 4-of-4 from long range. Wallace Tucker added 10 points and Matt Hanna tied for a game-high in assists with four. 
 
* Colby's defense held Trinity's starting five to just 13 points, but the Bantams did have some fine efforts off the bench. Joe Bell was 4-for-6 from 3-point range for a team-high 14 points. Nick Seretta finished with nine points, while Donald Jorden had an active game with six points, seven rebounds, and four blocked shots.
 
* The Mules held the Bantams to just 31.3 percent (21-for-67) field goal shooting. Trinity had a slight 46-43 advantage on the boards. 
 
Game highlights
* Colby held the Bantams to just 24.2 percent shooting in the first half and led 29-21 at intermission. Trinity had less than 10 points for the opening 13 minutes of the first half.
 
* Colby opened up a 19-point lead in the second half with 13:09 to play. The Bantams chipped away and cut the margin to 10 points (51-41) when Bell sank a 3-point shot with 7:51 to play. However, Jefferson answered moments later with a three of his own.
