Garcia homers, Parker throws complete game in tough loss for baseball team

Box Score

BRUNSWICK, Maine -- Colby College's Matt Garcia blasted a three-run homer and Brooks Parker allowed no earned runs for the Mules in a tough 5-4 loss at Bowdoin College in NESCAC East play Friday at Pickard Field.

The Mules (9-21-1 overall, 2-8 NESCAC) and the Polar Bears (13-15, 5-5 NESCAC) will play a doubleheader at Coombs Field at the Colby Baseball/Softball Complex on Saturday at noon.

The four teams coming to Waterville for the NESCAC Baseball Championships from May 12-14 are set. Bowdoin was officially eliminated from the playoffs after Tufts University beat Bates College on Friday. Bates and Tufts will represent the East Division, while Middlebury College and Amherst College come from the West Division.

Garcia (pictured) had two hits on the day, but the big one was his long blast to left field to cut Bowdoin's 5-1 lead down to 5-4 in the top of the seventh inning.  Ben Coleman, who had walked, and Matt Treveloni scored on the home run.

Polar Bear starter Brandon Lopez got out of the seventh to earn the win, striking out six and walking three. After Seamus Keenan pitched to one batter, Jack Wilhote pitched the final two innings, allowed one hit, and struck out the side in each inning for the save.

Parker took the tough loss for the Mules, allowing no earned runs over eight innings. He struck out nine and walked one.

Two errors in the fifth inning doomed the Mules, who also had an 11-6 advantage in hits, including three extra-base hits. With two outs and the bases loaded, Sawyer Billings reached on an error that brought in two runs. Lopez helped his own cause with an RBI single and Colby Joncas had a two-run single to plate the final two runs.

Colby had taken a 1-0 lead with a lone run in the fifth inning. Tyler Mulberry led off with a double and took third on a single by Ryder Arsenault. After a strikeout, Jackson Ward had an RBI ground out to shortstop to bring in Mulberry.

Mulberry finished with a pair of doubles for the Mules. Coleman and Andrew Della Volpe also had two hits. Colby left eight runners on base to Bowdoin's three.
