WATERVILLE, Maine --- With the baseball game at more than three hours, Colby College and Thomas College had to settle for a 2-2 tie in a game called because of darkness after 11 innings.
The umpires gave the teams every chance to finish the contest at Thomas. The 11th inning started after 7 p.m. Official game time was three hours, 15 minutes.
Colby (9-20-1 overall) received some terrific pitching from Bobby Forese (pictured), Dan Schoenfeld, and Jackson Ward. Forese pitched 5.1 innings, allowed only two hits and one earned run, struck out two and walked two. Schoenfeld finished the sixth inning and pitched the seventh, giving up one hit and fanning two Thomas batters. Ward pitched the final four innings and gave up two hits and struck out three while walking none.
The Mules left 11 runners on base, while the Terriers stranded six.Â
Ryder Arsenault had a pair of hits for the Mules. Matt Treveloni had one hit, two walks, and stole three bases. Matt Garcia had one hit, one run, and stole a base. Ben Coleman had the other run, walked twice, and stole two bases. Andrew Sterup also walked twice and had one hit.Â
The Mules had a golden opportunity with the bases loaded and no outs in the top of the third inning. Garcia singled and stole second, Sterup walked, and
Andrew Della Volpe loaded the bases with a walk.
Tyler Mulberry reached on a fielder's choice as Garcia scored from third base.
Colby went up 2-0 with its other run in the sixth inning. Matt Mitchell had a one-out bunt single, but was out at second when Ben Coleman reached on a fielder's choice. Coleman stole second base and advanced to third on a single by Treveloni. With two outs, Treveloni stole second base and Coleman came in on the throw for his second steal.
Thomas tied the game with two runs in the sixth. Riley Simonetti singled to left field and took second when Antonio Martinez was hit by a pitch. Derek LeBlanc sacrificed the runners over with a bunt. Simonetti came in on a wild pitch that moved Martinez to third. Schoenfeld got the second out with a strikeout, but Grant Corbett reached on an infield error that brought in the tying run.
Della Volpe, Colby's catcher, came up with two big throws in the bottom of the 10th inning. Tristan Pena led off with a single, but Della Volpe fired down to William Wessman at first base to pick off Pena. The play was important because Martinez followed with a single to center field. Della Volpe got his second assist of the inning when he threw out Martinez trying to steal second.
